About Chemist Direct Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical found in baking soda. It’s a form of salt that causes dirt and grease to dissolve in water, as well as being brilliant at absorbing odours, so it has all manner of household uses. It also does a great job of softening ear wax, and is recommended by clinicians as a gentle natural alternative if your ear wax problem isn’t too serious. Ear wax is a normal secretion of the ear. It is produced to provide a protective layer in the ear and on the ear drum. There are times when too much wax is produced. This can result in hearing difficulties and may cause pain. Ear drops work by softening the wax. If your ear wax isn’t clearing, try ear drops for 3–5 days initially, unless you’ve got a suspected perforation in your eardrum. Im not to keen on using ear drops unless I really have to. As it can give me dull hearing for a good few mins after using the ear drops.

The only cleaning necessary is to gently wipe inside the 'bowl' of your ear with a damp flannel over a finger, to clean away the wax from the entrance to the ear canal. Some people manually wash out their ears at home using body-temperature water and a saline solution with a bulb irrigator after using wax-softening drops. This is because they can damage the ear canal and eardrum, cause the wax to be impacted by pushing it further into your ear canal and could even perforate the eardrum. Ear irrigation at home

What is ear wax?

Firstly, as has already been pointed out, there is already a current thread on this topic which I suggest you read through. I and others point out in that thread that whichever drops you use (and I was steered clear of those particular drops by my doctor), they will take several days to have any effect - they are not an instant solution I'm afraid. And, yes, I DO know how uncomfortable it is as I suffer from it quite a lot. You may find it easier to do this first thing in the morning, and again just before you go to sleep.

Here's everything you need to know about Otex ear drops, including how they work, who shouldn't use them and the potential side effects: However, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says that ear candles will not help to remove ear wax, and could seriously injure your ear. Sodium Bicarbonate Ear Drops uses Sodium Bicarbonate to treat and soften hardened ear wax. This allows it to come out a lot easier for yourself or for syringing by the doctor. EDIT: I see that the Otex Express Ear Drops have a different formula (Urea Hydrogen Peroxide, 8-Hydroxyquinoline, Glycerol), so perhaps they are the ones to avoid. Before having these treatments, you'll probably be advised to use ear drops for a few days to soften the wax. Some people shouldn’t have ear irrigation, including those with ear conditions such as a perforated eardrum.

We've asked the experts including Kevin Munro, Professor of Audiology at the University of Manchester, to find out which simple home remedies, NHS and private options are available, and the unsafe methods to steer clear of.

Ear irrigation with an electronic irrigator – this flushes the wax out with water at low pressure: it's much safer and more effective than previous syringing methods because it maintains a set pressure as it pumps the water into your ear.
