About this deal

The Apollo Glasgow. The UK leg of the tour was to end here with Polydor recording the show. Four songs made it onto Dig The New Breed.

Wells, Simon (6 September 2011). "The Jam: December11th 1982 by Simon Wells". Modculture . Retrieved 20 December 2016. Can it really be nigh on 30 years since the Jam, Britain’s favourite ever Mod sensation, last trod the boards? Well, those yellowing press cuttings I carefully filed away in an oversize scrapbook under my bed tell me this is so. Well, actually it was 19 years; but seeing as I’m in a reflective mood having just passed the big 40, (and all that entails) it all just seems a hell of a long time ago. And as it’s December again outside my window, I thought it more than pertinent to share a few reflections on the day The Jam called it a day. Top 100 Artists". Virgin Radio. 2002. Archived from the original on 3 November 2005 . Retrieved 27 April 2011. The rest of the European leg of the tour was cancelled as PW had a severe bout of Shingles. This and other factors helped begin a series of rumors that the band were about to split. Theo Cateforis (7 June 2011). Are We Not New Wave?: Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s. University of Michigan Press. p.25. ISBN 978-0472034703. Throughout 1977 the term new wave continued to appear as a point of differentiation, distinguishing more melodic, pop-oriented groups like the Jam and the Stranglers from punk's increasingly politicized and violent realm.a b c d Sean Michaels (20 January 2010). "Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton reunite for a Jam". The Guardian. London. The final BEAT SURRENDER tour commences at The Apollo in Glasgow with a standing ovation from the crowd even before the band played a note. The Jam literately raised the roof with a storming performance that was replicated each night until they rolled into Brighton for their final concert. During the next 17 days the band performed 14 concerts including five consecutive nights at Wembley Arena and every date was captured on audience recordings. The band were interviewed for WPRB and WTSR radio stations in the afternoon before their performance and the gig was recorded by Wavebreaker Productions for transition to 60+ College radio stations. It was nice to sort of rediscover that skill later on, if you like, and just think, well, I love these songs like ‘Move On Up’. There’s a few of them dotted throughout our career, but it was really nice to just pull them out because we could do them easily. That’s what we cut our teeth on musically. So it was just really great to pull on those sorts of songs. I mean, that was probably the main reason why we did covers, especially with ‘David Watts’, I suppose was the fact that we didn’t have anything else to actually release as a single. So it was a nice sort of filler. Maybe not filler, but a bit of relief from having the pressure on Paul to come up with a new song. With the atmosphere in the hall literally on fire, some bloke (Swedish-Dutch?) came on to introduce the band: ‘For the last time, the only band to leave a solid bond in your heart- The Jam!!!!!!!!!!’

Following this performance the band stopped overnight with plans to see U2 the following evening but Paul & Bruce visit The Underground club and join members of a local band Boys Life and enjoy and an impromptu Jam session at the club. When "Town Called Malice" reached number one in the UK the group had the honour of performing both it and its double A-side, "Precious" on Top of the Pops – the only other band to be accorded this honour being the Beatles. [ citation needed] After the string-laden soul ballad " The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)" peaked at No.2, the band followed with their finale and another No.1, " Beat Surrender". The latter featured Tracie Young on vocals; a few months later, she also guested on The Style Council's debut single " Speak Like a Child".
