About this deal

I headed down to Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Asda to see what they had to offer and whether they could compete with the famous chocolate brands this Easter. It's fair to say I was surprised. Some of the confectionery from the budget supermarkets in particular were especially delicious. 10. Last place: Kit Kat Chunky Energy: 863kJ, 206kcal, 10% 100g: 2158 kJ / 516 kcal Reference intake of an average adult (8400 kJ/2000 kcal) It's that time of year again when it's absolutely acceptable to eat chocolate for breakfast. Followed by a hot cross bun. The long bank holiday weekend is upon us, and with that, a few extra days off work to spend time with friends and family. If you're not avoiding dairy, many 'normal' Easter eggs are free from gluten-containing ingredients anyway. M&S has launched a tempting Easter range featuring everything from fun chocolate eggs and special Colin the Caterpillar cakes, to sweet and savoury hot cross buns (even cheese ones). The collection is so creative, eye-catching and best of all, utterly divine.

Presentation-wise, the box also comes with a basket-style inner card, but the enchanted eggs came in a very plain white bag, not very "enchanted" looking as the name suggests. Dairy Fine Mini Eggs Chunky Bar - 225g (a great alternative to the Cadbury's Mini Eggs Bar which is now a 'may contain' for gluten) The Colin the Caterpillar Easter egg is perfect for kids. Wrapped in florescent green foil, the large egg was super creamy and smooth. Plus it came with a large bag of white chocolate mini Colin faces.Hollow Egg - Hollow milk chocolate egg. Galaxy® Enchanted Eggs - Milk chocolate with crunchy caramel pieces (8.0%), dusted with a rose gold coloured coating. I'd still give it a solid 7/10, just for presentation of the interior, the better value for money, and the chocolate on offer was still nice enough and enjoyable. Galaxy Enchanted Eggs

The Kitkat bunnies are quite nice, too. The chocolate is nice, like the egg, with small pieces of wafer inside them. Would I rather have actual Kitkats in the Easter Egg? Of course. But it's a nice addition that makes it feel more like an Easter egg. Important note: In 2022 the Mini Eggs Bar was gluten free, but now (2023) it has a 'may contain' warning and is NOT suitable for people with coeliac disease)This list is by no means exhaustive but contains most of the major supermarket and named brands I could find on the shelves. In keeping with the holiday spirit, I decided to compare some of my family's favourite chocolate Easter eggs, namely Cadbury and Galaxy, to some supermarket own brands to see which one tasted the best. The variety of eggs in the shops these days is endless. All of the Easter Eggs in this section of guide, at the time of writing, are gluten free, dairy free and safe for people with coeliac disease. You may find one size Easter egg from a brand is gluten free, while a different size has a 'may contain' warning. If you're going out of your way to buy a Galaxy Easter Egg, personally I think it's only justified that you expect the chocolate egg to be made from Galaxy, not the same plain, underwhelming chocolate you get in all other Mars Inc Easter eggs. I was really disappointed because I had high hopes for this egg, and then I realised I'd bought an Easter Egg pretty much identical to the last, give or take the chocolate that comes with it.

Most plain chocolate eggs are free from gluten but sadly some have 'may contain' warnings which mean they are not coeliac-safe. It had scrumptious crunchy bits and was ever so moreish. The German retailer also sells dark chocolate and caramel, and white chocolate and raspberry ripple flavoured eggs too. Cadbury is the classic staple when it comes to Easter Eggs. However, Mars and Nestlé also put out plenty of options for families to consider. Or drop me a comment at the bottom of this blog post and I can add them to this list! Aldi's free from Easter eggs Gluten Free Easter EggsGetting into the taste, the chocolate tasted good, it had a bit more of a snap to it than the Cadbury chocolate egg, but had a good sweetness to it. It did feel like it was missing something compared with the Cadbury egg, though.
