About this deal

Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author/illustrator enormously popular for her rhyming stories of the memorable Hairy Maclary, Slinky Malinki, Schnitzel Von Krumm - and many others! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The immensely popular Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is now available as an interactive KIWA Book with wonderful narration by David Tennant (Good Omens, Doctor Who). Hairy Maclary is a fictional dog, the hero of a series of children's picture books created by the New Zealand author Lynley Dodd and making his first appearance in 1983 with the publication of Hairy Maclary From Donaldson’s Dairy. The pictures and the written words combine to tell the story, with much anecdotal material appearing within the pictures that is not described in the text. Hairy Maclary's adventures are usually in the company of his other dog friends who include the Dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm, the Dalmatian Bottomley Potts, the Greyhound Bitzer Maloney, the English Mastiff Hercules Morse and the Old English Sheepdog Muffin McLay.

The books have a wide format that enables a child seated beside an adult to have a full view of the picture page while the adult reads. It gives great adjectives and similes to each dog within the book and it's so much fun going on different adventures with Hairy Maclary and his friends.

Hairy Maclary is a bouncy, scruffy and mischievous dog whose cheeky adventures with his lovable animal friends (and enemies! I found the fact that sentences ran across multiple pages a little off-putting, but I think that just comes down to personal preference. Run your fingers over the text to hear the story and touch any word to hear and see it spoken and spelt. These books are perefect to cuddle up and read with little ones, and for more confident kids to read themselves.A deliciously chunky hardback gift edition of five Hairy Maclary stories from the first, HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON'S DAIRY to HAIRY MACLARY'S RUMPUS AT THE VET. What attracted me was they were in a delightfully designed, perfectly fitting, canvas bag by Lynley Dodd with the Puffin Logo on it and as a collector of everything related to Penguin and Puffin books, I just had to have it! Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy combines simple narrative storytelling with virtuoso use of rhythm and rhyme, and Dodd’s gentle but energetic watercolour illustrations depict characters that are as well loved as they are mischievous.

This book sadly wasn't around when I was a child, but I have read it so many times as an adult - sometimes to real children, but just as often to myself. Characters, events and therefore language are repetitive and cumulative, in the manner of " Old MacDonald had a farm".

He's soon joined by his friends Greywacke Jones, Butterball Brown, the Poppadum kittens and the rest of the gang. The brilliantly clever rhyme and vivid, engaging pictures have made this story into a children's classic, beloved for over 40 years - and it's still one of the most popular picture books today. In this fabulous set of audio rhyming tales, Hairy Maclary and his friends just want to have fun, but trouble is never far away! Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? A 'cat and mouse' chase follows, with the two characters ending up peacefully snuggled together after Zachary Quack has saved a soggy Hairy Maclary from the river.

For example, the noise made by a stranded cat and the excited dogs who discover it is described as a "cacophony". She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and been translated into Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Swedish, Russian, Slovene [8] [9] - and te reo Māori. As Hairy Maclary dozily dreams and lies on his back ZIP round the corner comes Zackary Quack - and HE wants to play! The fun names are silly and purposefully long, which is more enjoyable for children to hear and repeat.
