About this deal

It was awarded a platinum certification by British Phonographic Industry on 5 December 1997 for over 300,000 copies sold. e 7 minutes and over, including the subtle intricacy of 'The Web' and the powerful 'Forgotten Sons'.

It was the penultimate release of Fish era Marillion albums in a recent deluxe reissue campaign that also includes Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, Brave, and Afraid of Sunlight. The first single, " He Knows You Know", preceded the release of Script for a Jester's Tear and launched the group into the Top 40, reaching number 35. It's an astonishingly confident debut destined never to be bettered, but thankfully now given a remastered new life, with extensive notes from all involved in the booklet plus earlier material and demos collected on disc two. The lyrics from Fish are more playful on tracks like "Garden Party" than on later albums, and his extremly wordy anecdotes telling the story of "The Web" are the most florid and grandiose Marillion ever got! Wenn man ein und dieselbe CD zwei mal hat, spricht das ziemlich eindeutig dafür, dass diese Musik gefällt.

A new 180g heavy weight vinyl edition featuring a gatefold sleeve and the original artwork was released in 2012.

Beautifully crafted debut album from one of the leading lights of the (relatively) short-lived progressive rock revival of the 1980s. Neither "Market Square Heroes", nor the B-sides of the 12" single, "Three Boats Down from the Candy" and the 17-minute-long epic "Grendel", were included on Script for a Jester's Tear, although a short radio segment of the A-side can be briefly heard prior to "Forgotten Sons". John Franck has given the album a retrospective rating of four-and-a-half stars out of five on AllMusic. I love this album as a whole: superb music, detailed lyrics and fantastic cover Artwork create a unified vision that Marillion had spent the proceeding few years creating. Mi piacciono i Marillion con Fish, non sono un vecchietto, ma uno che è appassionato di genesis, yes pink floyd, led Zeppelin e tutta la musica Rock anni 67 70 80.

In the title track a convoluted web of lyrical imagery invests its prosaic lost-my-girlfriend theme with a tortured passion previously alien to prog rock. There really isn't a bad moment as the warm, yet sparse, weave of the songs carries the early, mannered Vocals of Fish through his first Loves and Life experiences. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In 2020, EMI released a deluxe version of the album with four CDs and a Blu-ray disc that contains new remixes of the original album, the full "Market Square Heroes" 12" single (except for the original version of "Market Square Heroes" which is replaced by the "Battle Priest" version), and a previously unreleased live set from 1982 at London's Marquee Club.

The drummer puts in a good performance, just markedly different to later albums which helps define this early, fragile sound. On the lighter side, 'Garden Party' finds Marillion's cultured wordsmith, Fish, venting his spleen at the British class system - the nice, but dim 'Oxbridge' types are firmly in the firing line here - but the attack comes in an amusing way. Script for a Jester's Tear is the only studio album by Marillion to feature the band's original drummer and founding member Mick Pointer, who was dismissed following the album's UK tour.

This is in no small part to the presence on the kit of Pointer who lacked his successors drive and strong rhythmic ability. Um ehrlich zu sein: Mir hat auch die Klangqualität der ersten Pressung gut gefallen, aber jetzt klingt alles noch etwas brillanter und differenzierter. It was produced by David Hitchcock, who was also contracted to work on the group's first full-length album. Singer Fish plays the role of misunderstood poet to perfection, his bedsit anguish memorably realised by sleeve artist Mark Wilkinson. Script for a Jester's Tear was a commercial success, reaching number 7 in the United Kingdom and spending 31 weeks on the charts, the second-longest album chart residency for Marillion.I have to admit I did not follow the band after Fish left because for me, Marillion became a more commercial Indy band, but I do respect they have still gone on to have an admirable career but this record for me will always have a corner of my musical heart, as I explored the music as I matured. The cover artwork was designed by Mark Wilkinson, who would be commissioned to the role on all Marillion releases through The Thieving Magpie (1988). He Knows You Know" gained some airplay in the United States and reached number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
